What we serve
Gelato and Loaded Ice Cream in Northwood Hills
One scoop of gelato is £2.50, two scoops £4.50 and three scoops £6.00, with a waffle cone for £1.00 more. Loaded ice cream is £3.50 in Oreo, Lotus or Kinder, and £4.50 for the Kunafa. A plain Ice Cream Cone is £2.50. Everything on the counter is halal and no alcohol is served anywhere in the shop. It is the cheapest way to end an evening here, and it is available from nine in the morning. We are at 56 Joel Street in Northwood Hills, directly opposite the station on the Metropolitan line.
Scoops: £2.50, £4.50 and £6.00
Gelato is sold by the scoop. One scoop is £2.50, two are £4.50 and three are £6.00. A waffle cone is £1.00 on top of any of those, and a plain Ice Cream Cone is £2.50.
The pricing rewards ordering more, which is presumably the idea. Three scoops at £6.00 is £2.00 each against £2.50 for a single.
Flavours are in the counter and you choose there rather than off a printed list, so what is available depends on the day.
One scoop is the right order after a full plate. Two is the right order as the dessert itself. Three is for sharing, or for a warm evening when nobody is in a hurry.
Gelato is also the answer for a table where one person wants dessert and nobody else does. At £2.50 it does not commit anybody to anything.
If you would rather drink it, Gelato Shakes are £5.95 and are blended from any of the gelato flavours, so the shake list runs as long as the counter does.
Loaded ice cream, £3.50 and £4.50
Loaded ice cream is the fuller version. Oreo, Lotus or Kinder is £3.50. Kunafa is £4.50.
Kunafa is shredded pastry, so the kunafa loaded is the one with crunch in it rather than more biscuit. It is a pound more than the others and it is the most interesting of the four.
If kunafa is what you came for, there are other formats: the Dubai Kunafa Donut at £2.95, the Dubai Kunafa Chocolate at £3.50, the Kunafa milkcake at £7.50 and the Strawberry Kunafa Cup at £7.95.
There is also a separate topping list for desserts: Oreo, Lotus Biscoff, Marshmallow, Chocolate Flake, Kinder, Chocolate Curls, White Curls, Rainbow Sprinkles, Sherbet and Terry's Orange.
Between loaded ice cream at £3.50 and a scoop at £2.50, the loaded version is the one children ask for and the scoop is the one adults order. That is not a rule, it is just what happens at the counter.
All of it is halal, and the vegetarian range across the shop is marked with a V on the menu.
Where gelato sits on the dessert counter
Gelato is also an add-on rather than only a dessert on its own.
Cookie Dough is £5.95, and you can add ice cream for £1.50 or gelato for £2.00. Matilda Cake is £6.95 with custard or ice cream at £1.50 extra, and School Cake is £4.95 on the same terms. Brownies with Ice Cream is £6.95 and Apple Crumble with Custard is £6.95.
On the customer favourites board, Gulab Jamun with ice cream is £5.95 and Gajar Halwa with ice cream is £5.95. Those are the two desi classics that come with ice cream as standard rather than as an extra.
Milkcakes are £6.95 in Pistachio, Lotus Biscoff and Oreo, and £7.50 for the Kunafa, and they are cold rather than hot, so they compete with gelato rather than pair with it.
So: if you want cold and simple, scoops. If you want hot and cold together, cookie dough with gelato at £7.95. If you want cold and soft, a milkcake.
Everything is on the counter all day, from 9:00.
A cheap way to spend an evening here
One scoop at £2.50 and a small Karak Chai at £3.25 is £5.75 for two things and a table.
That is worth spelling out, because the room here is not set up to move people through quickly. There are velvet booths, big tables, and ludo and snakes and ladders printed into the marble. People stay. A family of four can sit for an hour on four scoops and a round of chai without anybody minding.
If you want to spend more, the Family Lunch at £29.95 covers two jackets with two toppings, any two paninis, four canned drinks and two cookie doughs.
We are open until 23:00 Monday to Thursday and Sunday, and until midnight on Friday and Saturday, and the gelato counter is open the whole time rather than closing early.
Because we are directly opposite Northwood Hills station on the Metropolitan line, an ice cream after a film or a walk is an easy last stop rather than a plan of its own.
Finding us
Cha Cha Chai Northwood Hills is at 56 Joel Street, Northwood Hills, Northwood HA6 1PA. From the exit at Northwood Hills station on the Metropolitan line it is about thirty seconds, straight across the road.
The H11 and 282 buses stop on Joel Street outside the door. There is free and pay-and-display parking on Joel Street and the side roads around it, which matters more for a family trip than for a single scoop.
We open at 9:00 seven days a week.
The chilled dessert cabinet runs along the counter, so the gelato, the milkcakes and the donuts are all in front of you before you order rather than described on a board.
Gelato is on Deliveroo, Just Eat and Uber Eats. It is one of the few things on this menu that is genuinely worse for the journey, so if you are within walking distance, come in for it.
Everything on the counter is halal, and there is a halal roundel on the entrance door.
